Where is McCowan Retirement Residence located?
McCowan Retirement Residence is located on Eglinton Avenue in Scarborough, Ontario very close to the Toronto city limits.
What is an assisted or supportive living residence?
Assisted or supported living is a senior housing alternative for residents who may need help with dressing, bathing, eating, and using the washroom, but do not require intensive medical and nursing care provided in nursing homes.
McCowan offers both a la carte services for supportive living as well as an all inclusive supportive living package that include these types of services for our residents.
What does independent living mean?
At McCowan Retirement Residence, it means you can be as independent as you please, and live the way you prefer to. At the same time, life in our retirement residence means you’re part of a community, surrounded by friendship and support, engaged in a range of social activities and outings, and eating with friends and neighbours in an elegant dining room.
Do you offer dementia care services?
We certainly do. McCowan is one of the few retirement homes in Scarborough with a secure and dedicated dementia care floor which provides specialized care for people living with Alzheimer’s or other severe memory impairments.
Will I be able to bring my cat or dog with me?
We understand that pets are beloved members of your family, and we’re happy to welcome them to McCowan Retirement Residence. We are happy to review and discuss our pet policies with you prior to moving in.
What type of furniture is provided?
Our suites come equipped with a bar sized refrigerator and microwave, as well as window treatments. You may bring your own furniture, bed linens, towels, plants, toiletries, and anything else to make yourself feel at home.
Is the building secure?
All doors are secured at night, and you will have your own personal key to come and go as you please. There is professional staff in the building 24 hours a day to ensure your security. They will be available to you at all times with the push of a button, and would be pleased to check on you throughout the night if you have any concerns.
Do you have an “emergency” call system to use in case of problems?
Absolutely. You will have access to our 24-hour Emergency Response System.
Will there be air conditioning?
Each suite has its own air conditioning and heating system, which you can adjust for your own personal comfort.
Will I be able to bring my vehicle?
Yes, you are welcome to bring your car. Designated parking spaces are available for licensed drivers who have their own vehicles. These spaces are subject to availability, and additional charges may apply.
What about my privacy?
To protect your privacy and to ensure security, we do not display a directory at the front door nor will staff give out your suite or phone number. We will be happy to provide you with more information regarding our privacy policies when you move in, or upon request.
Can I do my own laundry?
Yes. There are laundry facilities available in the building for your personal use. You may also choose to have our staff do your laundry on a weekly basis for a charge, giving you more time to enjoy the things you would like to do.
When can my friends and family visit?
Visiting hours are anytime. Our dedicated staff are available day and night to allow your loved ones access to visit while protecting your privacy.
Can I go out anytime I want?
You may come and go as you please. For fire and safety purposes, we just ask that you sign out when leaving and sign in once you return. The sign out/in book is located at the Front Desk.
What if I want to have family in for dinner?
Family and friends are welcome to join you for a meal anytime. We ask that you notify the Front Desk so that they may ensure that a table is set up for your company. Payment may be arranged through our Front Desk.
Can I have a family member stay with me?
Family and friends from out of town are welcome to enjoy a “hotel stay” with us, which will include meals at very reasonable rates, provided there is a suite available at that time. If you have adequate extra space in your suite, you are welcome to have a short-term guest stay for a limited amount of time. For fire and safety purposes we ask that you notify us of the arrival and departure dates of your guest.
Do I have to sign a lease?
We ask all residents to sign a lease in order to ensure everyone is aware of their right and the standards of the senior’s community. At that time, the charges for all services will be explained and provided in writing to ensure you are provided with complete financial information. However, you are not held to a long-term lease at any time, and we will request only 30 days notice if you wish to leave McCowan Retirement Residence for any reason.
